Chap Clark's groundbreaking Hurt: Inside the World of Today's Teenagers revealed the hard truth about contemporary adolescence: societal changes and systemic abandonment have left teenagers struggling to navigate the ever lengthening and ever more difficult transition to adulthood without caring adults.
When Kids Hurt offers these challenging insights to youth workers and parents in a more accessible form, with greater focus on how adults should respond. Practical sidebars and application sections, contributed by other youth experts, provide additional insights into youth culture and how adults can better guide adolescents into adulthood. This book will be an important resource for youth workers, parents, counselors, and others who work with youth.
“Daniel Hughes has done more here than translate the science of attachment theory to the general reader. He offers readable, thoughtful, practical tools capable of transforming relationships. 8 Steps to Building Your Best Relationships has the power to change your life.” — Terry Real, founder of the Relational Life Institute (RLI) and author of The New Rules of Marriage
The late Carl Rogers, founder of the humanistic psychology movement, revolutionized psychotherapy with his concept of client-centered therapy. His influence has spanned decades, but that influence has become so much a part of mainstream psychology that the ingenious nature of his work has almost been forgotten. Houghton Mifflin is delighted to introduce this preeminent psychologist to the next generation with a new edition of this landmark book.
Responding to families’ questions and fears with compassion.
Typically the patient―and his or her course of treatment―are the natural focal points when it comes to Alzheimer’s disease (AD). But Alzheimer’s is an equally debilitating illness for family members and caregivers who must come to terms with its far-reaching emotional and physical burdens.
In this handbook, clinicians are taught how to navigate the many interpersonal issues at the heart of AD―that is, how to work with the families and friends of the patient. Santulli addresses everything from how to respond compassionately to their likely questions and concerns, how to clearly explain symptoms and risk factors, when to suggest consultation with a geriatric specialist, and how to sensitively
This book is a help for each one who feel the need to deal with their anger, who wants to act with anger in an effective way, they want to leave the past and move forward, suffer from spoiling their relationships with others as a result of bouts of anger, those who feel unhappy and lack of control over themselves.
Here is a wise and thoughtful book by a physician of profound religious faith who believed that man's physical and emotional health are rooted in a wholesome spiritual life. What if imagination and art are not, as many of us might think, the frosting on life but the fountainhead of human experience? What if our logic and science derive from art forms, rather than the other way around? In this trenchant volume, Rollo May helps all of us find those creative impulses that, once liberated, offer new possibilities for achievement. A renowned therapist and inspiring guide, Dr. May draws on his experience to show how we can break out of old patterns in our lives.
In this collaborative work the authors closely explore the growing academic and cultural interest in spirituality and spiritual transformation. They argue that "we are witnessing a new horizon of converging interest in the intersections between science, religion, and spirituality." Organized in three parts--transforming spirituality in psychology, transforming spirituality in theology, and modeling spiritual transformation--Transforming Spirituality fills a void in the current literature. In turn, its nine chapters discuss spirituality in relation to health, human development, the biblical tradition, philosophy, and the natural sciences.
Gerali consistently gives practical advice and suggestions on how to more effectively minister to adolescent guys. The beauty of this book is in the way Gerali's longtime involvement in youth ministry infects every element of the book....This book is an invaluable tool and should find its way onto the bookshelf of anyone involved in ministry to adolescents. (YouthWorker Journal)
This is a book that I would recommend anyone who has gotten too used to living, and is taking it for granted. For life is precious, and a shame to waste. Rollo May's method of synthesizing literature, history, legend, psychology and philosophy makes this book accessible, relevant, and important.
Carl Rogers was a stubborn warrior when he entered many battles - battles in the field of treatment of income with scientific medicine and psychiatry, who tried to prevent psychologists from treating patients..
Repetition means getting our cognitive and moral bearings not through prompted remembering, but quite unexpectedly as a gift from the unknown, as a revelation from the future. Repetition is epiphany that sometimes grants the old again, as new, and sometimes grants something radically new.
